This is a big one, and is often made easy with cloud advancements using packaged solutions like Office 365 or Jive. Certainly cloud implementations are trending high now, and for good reason. Cloud hosting represents an inexpensive way to get started with an Intranet for your business and take advantage of enterprise class solutions. Unfortunately, there is often no simple migration path, which means a manual or third party migration process is required for those organizations already using on-prem solutions.
However, larger organizations and those with sensitive health care or financial data often prefer to host Intranets using the classic method of on premise server farms. These farms can require extensive planning to ensure reliability, scalability and availability through the maintenance and upgrade lifecycle of the product.
Before choosing a path, weigh all options with a 3 year time horizon to compare costs, resource allocation, and disaster recovery requirements.
Takeaway: Decide carefully whether your organization can live with the limitations of an Online Intranet or whether you require the control afforded by an on premises solution.
